Cover for Stephanie Meyer — Twilight (Designed by Gail Doobinin)

Twilight is a book that people have strong opinions about, one way or the other. But let’s just focus on the cover here. Think about how much is suggested by an apple held in a “v” shape — temptation, hunger, and lust. All of this is accomplished with a single image and three colors — red, white, and black. And the general design was imitable enough that it could be echoed in the covers for every other book in the series (to say nothing of the many, many parodies). A great cover is one that can become an icon, and this is cover absolutely nails it.
