Cover for Karen Maitland — Company of Liars (Designed by Gray 318)

How many different ways can a cover suggest death? Here we have rats, skulls, fire, and crosses, all superimposed on the head of a wolf with sharp teeth and a rolling tongue. I love this cover because it immediately, before even opening the cover, suggests the high-stakes world where this story takes place. (Of course, if there’s any doubt for the potential reader, the subtitle “A Novel of the Plague” should clear things up.)
