It is very, very difficult to browse the Internet without coming across a link to an Upworthy article. Even if you don’t know these by name, you’ve certainly seen them. The Upworthy formula taps into some subconscious part of the brain that makes you click on a link before you’ve even processed that you don’t really care about what it says. This type of writing is impossible to avoid these days, as so much of our online interaction is decided by triggering impulse behavior.

So what happens when these become skills worth passing on to future generations? What if editors on sites like Buzzfeed moved on to academia? How would they get you to take their classes?

  1. While I enjoyed the humor in your “up worthy posts” I would have to state that they have no place in the academic world.
    The last thing we need is to have people clicking on and signing up for classes that they really don’t want and are unqualified for. In my humble opinion this will just fill up the classes with undeserving students and leave no openings for students that really want and need a particular course.
    The class heading and description should remain “just the facts” boring, simple and to the point. I would prefer to mettle through the rigid descriptions than to shop for a class based on “eye candy.”
    But that’s just my opinion. With that said, thanks for the interesting article.
